Awesome school and lots of fun

The Living Rainforest

On a rather cold and frosty morning, Year 3 travelled to the Living Rainforest near Newbury as part of their Geography topic on St. Lucia. Who would have thought that such warm and steamy conditions existed so close to Fordingbridge! After a long drive, we were delighted to meet our guide who talked to us about the amazing ways that animals in the rainforest have adapted to suit their environment. We saw tree pythons, beetles, giant millipedes and stick insects, all brilliantly camouflaged. Round each corner, we saw strikingly patterned leaves that hid different kinds of creatures. We learned that some creatures pretend to be poisonous by having a brightly coloured skin - they are soon left alone! Turtles, tortoises, tiny monkeys and strange looking birds wandered across our path, each one showing its own means of adapting. We even saw baby crocodiles - safely out of reach, of course. We couldn't wait to go back into the rainforest on our own after lunch and it was an opportunity to look more closely at the wonderful plants and animals. Some people would like to have taken one or two of them home, but, strangely enough, no-one volunteered to take the spider who blinds her prey with her hairy eyes! I wonder why. See pictures of our adventure!
